Although Arusha National Park is one of the lesser known wonders in Tanzania’s Northern Circuit, don’t be fooled that it doesn’t have so much to offer visitors. Due to its proximity to Arusha town, it is a popular destination for day trip visitors embarking on the longer Northern Circuit safaris such as Serengeti.
Nestled in the park is the majestic Mt Meru, often used as an acclimatisation trek for those climbing Kilimanjaro. The three-day trek to reach the crater’s summit is a quieter, and possibly more challenging alternative to its more well-known neighbour Mount Kilimanjaro. From the slopes of Mt Meru you have the opportunity to view a vast range of species inhabiting the park boundaries and although elephants are a more uncommon sight in Arusha National Park, with lions not being present at all, visitors will have a chance to see leopards, giraffes and spotted hyenas skulking around in the early mornings and late afternoons.
